Well it has now been almost a week of part time play on 888, and after a rough start I am starting to hit my stride and am up over $650 from 115 tournaments. It has been a struggle but I believe I am now prepared for my Aussie Millions campaign to kick off in earnest, this Saturday, on 888!
I was extremely rusty when I began; I was playing too many hands, not using my position, not looking past my own hole cards and definitely calling way too many three bets. The leaks were a plenty and at no time could I claim I was running bad, I was just playing devastatingly bad. I had become a level 1 thinker and metagame was out the window, the strongest part of my game previously was definitely my ability to read people and assign fairly accurate hand ranges and the fact I was no longer doing this was just an extreme disappointment.
So after one horrendous session I went through my past hands and studied quite a few of my stats and I found the following:
1.) I was oping from early position way too often with real marginal hands like KQ or AT. These should be a fold.
2.) When I was three bet I was calling off way too much with these marginal holdings, this is terribad; considering that I am quite often a three or four to one underdog against a standard three bet range.
3.) I was also putting myself in coin flip situations too early in tournaments by overplaying AK, AQ, JJ and TT. I was treating these hands like AA and four or even five betting with them.
4.) I was getting too aggressive post flop and firing too many barrels on most hands, sometimes with boards I hadn't even connected with.
5.) I wasn't even trying to put my opponents on a hand and wasn't thinking past my own hole cards. I needed to ask myself more basic questions like: What is he calling with in this spot? Would he check raise me here with only top pair or something stronger? etc....
5.) There were a few more leaks, but these will require a more intimate knowledge of VP$IP, PFR, 3b% and other unique stats. Again, I will discuss this in more detail via Mistress Poker articles, when I get around to writing them; I need to find the time.
So after fixing these leaks I have found that I am playing much more profitable and skillful poker and have commenced my Aussie Millions campaign. I played a $5 Phase 1 last night and won that to ship a phase 2 satellite entry.
Unfortunately on 888 the campaign won't be very time friendly for me as I had to be up at 7am to play the phase two this morning before heading to work. Unfortunately I got too impatient and finished up 18/47 when I re shipped on the Small blind with A9 and he snapped that off with AJ and it held.
This Saturday should be a lot of fun for me with the Phase 3 on at 7am (even if I don't Satellite in I will buy in directly for the $109 buy in) and then we have the exclusive 888PL Aussie Millions Event 1 Satellite at 7pm. This should prove to be a good event with limited rebuys and a big addon bonus; I am really looking forward to this event and with a $1,500 GTD prize pool for a $10 buy in should prove to be good value for money.
So after 114 tourneys here is my profit graph:
I have played 119 tourneys for a ROI of 55% and an ITM rate of 22%. Not bad for the very rusty start I had, even though this sample is not really a measure of skill or not.
All the best and I look forward to playing against some of you this weekend in the 888PL event.
